Post 6: Photo Gallery due March 9 16 at 10 p.m. Worth 50 points

Create a photo essay covering a visual aspect of your beat. Go somewhere and photograph an event/topic/people. You must take your own photos. You are encouraged to use your cell phone if it captures quality images.

Take a variety of images that help tell your story. Get a mix of wide, medium, and close-ups. Take more than you need. Try to take 50+ images. The ones you post should be your strongest images.

Post five (5) images. Use your judgment on how many images are needed to tell your story or cover your event. Get full names of people photographed – first and last – and put them in captions. Practice journalistic ethics. Your photographs should show real events, real people, and real places in real-time.

Write a few sentences of text to introduce your essay or add captions for each. Make sure we know the basics: who, where, when, and why.

Post them in a series, gallery, or using the WordPress slide show display feature.

Try to tell a story or convey information visually, rather than with text.

Grading Criteria:

  • Descriptive headline with key words. Introductory text and captions provides needed information and context. (Conveys who, what, where, when, why. Full names of subjects provided.) (5 points)
  • Original reporting and effort. (Did you go somewhere visually interesting that is related to your beat topic? Do they show real events and people in real-time?) (15 points)
  • Content of photos. (Are photos interesting to look at? Are they informative? Does the viewer learn something? Do they offer a glimpse into an event, place, or person? Are they worth looking at?) (15 points)
  • Quality of photos. (Attention to focus, framing, composition, variety) (15 points)

About Nick DiUlio

My name is Nick DiUlio, a freelance writer and editor from New Jersey. I have been passionate about the craft of writing since I was old enough to spell, and this love has led to a successful career in journalism and creative nonfiction. As a freelancer, I have covered a wide range of topics and personalities, as my published work has focused on everything from profiles of artists and important political figures to hard-news stories with both national and local appeal; from restaurant and beverage reviews to tips on fashion and finance; from health and wellness pieces to celebrity Q&A’s. My work has appeared in several local, regional and national publications—both in print and online—including Philadelphia Magazine, Slate.com, Miller-McCune, New Jersey Monthly, Eating Well, and Delaware Today. Additionally, I am the South Jersey Bureau Chief for New Jersey Monthly and an adjunct journalism professor at Rowan University. To be sure, the broadness of my body of work seems only to be matched by my boundless interest in almost every subject imaginable (except Warren Zevon).
